Pie day to raise money for library project—June 29, 2012
Catherine Landis chose the title “Some Days There’s Pie” for her humorous and touching story of friendship between an older woman fighting for the end of her life and a young woman fighting for a start. At the Hastings Public Library, Monday July 9th will be the day there is pie at the library. That is the date for “Between the Crusts – HPL’s Second Pie Baking Contest”, a fundraiser for the Renew Hastings Public Library Capital Campaign and an opportunity for everyone to participate.
If you wish to enter a pie, simply bring your pie, in a disposable pan if possible, to the library between 9 am and 2 pm on Monday, July 9th. Pies will be judged in traditional single crust, traditional double crust, crumb or non-traditional crust and best filling categories. Winners will be posted at the beginning of the pie sale at 4 pm.
If you would like some help creating a winning entry, try Rose Beranbaum’s “The Pie and Pastry Bible” which offers almost 70 pages just about crusts, much less the chapters on fruit pies, chiffon pies, custard pies and savory pies. Martha Stewart’s “Baking Handbook” doesn’t have quite that much content but it does have the cutest crust embellishments and great tips on basic techniques.
Two other titles that will give you great pie entry suggestions are “Pie Every Day: Recipes and Slices of Life” by Pat Willard and “Farmhand’s Favorite Pies” by Amy and David Butler. If you want to try something a bit out of the ordinary, look at the pie chapter in “Sugar-Free Desserts”, a Favorite All Time Recipes cookbook or “The Wonderful World of Pizzas, Quiches, and Savory Pies” by Anna Teresa Callen.
If you are not a baker, don’t despair. Starting at 4 pm on Monday, July 9th you can trade a $5 donation to the library building fund for a piece of pie and a scoop of ice cream. We will serve pie in the big meeting room on the library’s second floor until the pie runs out. A whole pie auction will also start at 5:30 pm.
Don’t miss out on pie day at Hastings Public Library! For more information about these events call the library at 402-461-2346.
