Summer Reading Program starts—June 4, 2010
The Summer Reading Program is underway at the library, and you’ll find a reading program for every member of the family! Tuesday was the first day, but the program runs until July 24, and if you haven’t been in yet it’s not too late to get started!
Children preschool age through fourth grade (grade next fall) may pick up a “Make a Splash—READ!” Reading Tally sheet at the children’s desk and take it home to keep track of their reading. Those in fifth through twelfth grade (grade next fall) may pick up a “Make Waves at Your Library” reading sheet at the front desk and take it home to record the books they read. All ages are encouraged to bring the sheets back to the library to receive prizes and to enter weekly drawings.
The library will host special programs each Tuesday afternoon and all participants in the Summer Reading Program are welcome to attend. The programs will feature magicians, a storyteller, therapy dogs, and more. Every Thursday afternoon children are invited to come to the library for a feature-length, G-rated movie, and they are welcome to bring snacks and drinks with them if they wish. There is a listing of all the programs on our web site (www.hastings.lib.ne.us) or you may pick up a flyer at the library with the programs and movies listed.
Saturday, June 5, kids are welcome to come to the library between 10:00 a.m. and noon for a “kick-off event.” There will be balloons, crafts, and other activities. Children’s book author Leslie Means from Kearney will also be at the library from 10:00-11:00 a.m. autographing copies of her book “Ella B. Bella and the Magic Pink Shoes.” Take advantage of this opportunity to meet an author!
The Summer Reading Program is free for children of all ages thanks to the generous funding provided by the Hastings Kiwanis Club.
Adults may also participate in their own Summer Reading Program—“Catch the Reading Wave.” Each time you return your library book, fill in a slip with the title of the book you read or write your name on your check-out receipt to enter a drawing for weekly prizes.
Visit the library often and make reading a family activity this summer!
