Library a Utopia for readers—May 13, 2011
What is plastic, has a barcode, and fits in a pocket or purse? Possession of this FREE item provides thousands of Adams County residents with incredible benefits. Have you guessed what “it” is? A library card!
Many residents view Hastings Public Library as a warehouse for books. It’s true that billions of words are spun together and sorted among thousands of titles in hundreds of topics. Appropriate volumes in both fiction and non-fiction can be found for every age group. Patrons can choose books which can teach, inspire and entertain. It is a reader’s Utopia.
Books on CD are available for people who like to multi-task or travelers who break up the monotony of a long trip with a good book. Still others like to pierce the silence of bedtime with a relaxing story.
The library’s collection of DVDs continues to grow. Popular releases such as RED and SECRETARIAT are available. There are classic WESTERNS, SCIENCE topics, HISTORY and MUSICALS. HEALTH videos include fitness programs as well as helpful information on diets and illnesses. Interested in dancing? The HOW TO DVDs includes dance instructions which can be enjoyed by any age group. Some DOCUMENTARY DVDs are guaranteed to inspire viewers, such as A Fighting Chance: Everyday Is A Battle. By The People: the Election of Barack Obama, covers the rise of a relatively unknown politician to the loftiest post in the nation. Several DVDs stir memories for older Hastings’ residents with pictures and narratives about the city’s past.
Entertainment and learning are not limited to materials found on the shelves @ HPL. Classes are offered free of charge. Just recently, patrons enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about gardening in four sessions. The library also offers basic computer classes for those wanting to become more tech savvy, with special topics every month like ebook labs, photosharing and Facebook.
A library wouldn’t be complete without people sharing thoughts about various materials. HPL’s book club meets monthly to discuss a popular book and socialize. The tiniest readers are included in the fun provided by books. Story and playtime is offered for tots up to 24 months old. Toddlers up to 3 years and their favorite lap can enjoy a soothing story time every other Thursday. Pre-schoolers can choose between the morning or afternoon story time on Wednesdays. Once a month, children are invited to the Imagination Playground, with equipment that allows them to study creative possibilities and have fun.
Yes, there is always something going on at the library! So far, you’ve only heard about the “school year schedule”. Wait until you see what’s going on this summer!
