Summertime and the listening is easy—June 15, 2013
During summer, most activities are done outside with some music in the background. One of my favorite things to do when the sun is shining and the temperature is a little toasty, is to throw on my shades, roll down the windows, crank up one of my favorite CDs and cruise down an old dirt road. It’s very relaxing. It’s important that you have the right soundtrack for a relaxing and fun summer. I like modern music, but when it comes to summertime nothing beats the oldie but goodies. Here’s my top four summer good time albums.
- Jerry Jeff Walker-Ridin’ High | This one is definitely some old school country, but I was raised on this album. I remember when I was little; sitting around when I went camping with my family and this album was playing in the background. When I got my first car, this was one of the first CDs I bought for it. For those that are of age, it’s a great album to listen to with a beer in your hand while sitting around a campfire. While my favorite song is the very last song on the CD, a close runner up is “Pot can’t call the kettle black”. I can’t help but singing even as I type this, it’s definitely worth looking up.
- Steve Miller Band-Greatest hits 1974-78 | As its title suggests, this CD has some really great tracks on it. “Swingtown” is one of my favorites, especially driving down a dirt road. As it suggests, it makes you want to go out and dance. I saw these guys in concert last summer at the State Fair, and it made me appreciate them even more. Plus, it also has “The Joker” on it, and let’s be honest…who doesn’t love that song?
- Johnny Cash-CASH | There are a lot of Johnny Cash albums out there. It’s really hard to pick just one, and really any of them will prove to be a good time, but this one is my favorite. It’s only 10 tracks long, but it’s a nice mix of songs from his early career, all the way through his last single before he died “Hurt.” My favorite is definitely “A boy named Sue.” I can’t help but scream loudly along with the song, “My name is SUE…How do you DO! Now….” Well, either you already finished that sentence, or you need to check the CD out and hear the end.
- The Thrills-Let’s bottle Bohemia | Back when I was in college, I went with my future sister in law to see the band Maroon 5 in concert. It was a good time, and I enjoyed it…but what I took away from that concert was their opening act, a little known Irish band called The Thrills. I bought their CD because it was cheap, and I even had it autographed by the band…but over the next few weeks I learned that CD by heart. That was over five years ago, and it still stands true as one of my favorite CDs. My favorite song on this album is the second song on the album, “Whatever happened to Corey Haim?” It sounds a little weird, but it’s one that easily gets stuck in your head all day.
Okay, that’s it. We have all of these wonderful CDs here at the library, along with many others that may include YOUR favorite summer tracks. CDs check out for three weeks, just like books…so come check them out, and build your own great summer soundtrack!
