May the 4th be with you—May 3, 2013
Certain holidays stick out in your mind...Christmas, Halloween, Easter...but my favorite underrated holiday is tomorrow...May the 4th. What is so special about May the 4th? Well....May the 4th be with you. Say it out loud...does it make sense yet? It's Star Wars day! A day when nerds all around can rejoice, and giggle just a little bit at that cheesy pun. For me, it's always a reminder that I need to take time and watch a Star Wars movie.
I know that not everybody appreciates the awesomeness that is Star Wars, but for those that do, get excited because it has taken over the library temporarily. We will be hosting our first ever Star Wars day celebration tomorrow from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. It is something we are doing to try and get the whole family involved. There will be some Jedi training stations for young padawans to practice honing their skills and using the force. We will also be serving up some tasty Star Wars treats which are sure to be "out of this world!" Most importantly, we have a special guest appearance by one of Star Wars most iconic characters showing up for a photo op at 4PM. Costumes are not required, but highly encouraged. I will be the one dressed like R2D2 ready for the ballet.
The fun has already started catching on, if you check out our Facebook page you can see what shenanigans some of our staff has gotten into preparing for the big event. We even have community members donating to the excitement, one of our patrons has lent us his awesome Star Wars memorabilia to put on display in anticipation of the event. The fun doesn't stop on May the 4th either. Our pub quiz at Hastings Keno on May 8th is going to have a Star Wars theme. This one promises to be a fun one with a variety of questions about all the movies. Don't be intimidated though, I am making the quiz more about fun than knowledge. I can't give away too many details, but there will be some character recognition photos as part of the quiz.
We may not be able to put on something crazy like Comi-Con, but we can still celebrate. Even if you can't make it to the library ..I hope you still find a way to celebrate. This is the day to let your nerd show, and be proud of it!
