Find hit television shows here—Friday, August 19
Checking out movies at the library can be a real money saver. One of the many cool things the library has to offer in the DVD department is TV Series. Today I thought I would talk about a few series that the library has that come from the BBC or the British Broadcasting Channel.
The BBC is known for some of its comedies, some of which you may even have seen on PBS. One of my favorites is Are You Being Served? This show follows workers in the gentleman and ladies departments of Grace Brothers Department Store, such as Mrs. Slocombe who’s hair changes colors in every episode, and Captain Peacock the floor walker who tries to keep everybody in line.
Also try Fawlty Towers. This show stars John Cleese as Basil Fawlty a hotel owner who is constantly getting into trouble and having to deal with annoying clients at his hotel. If you like John Cleese also try Monty Python’s Flying Circus a popular British sketch comedy that is reminiscent of Saturday Night Live, and also went on to inspire such movies as Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Keeping Up Appearances, about nosy housewife Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced ‘Bouquet’) who is constantly dealing with her crazy family and annoying her neighbors and other members of the community with invitations to her candle-lit suppers.
The BBC also makes many fun fantasy and science fiction series. Merlin tells the story of the early adventures of a young Merlin and his relationship with Prince Arthur at Camelot, where magic is banned and anyone that gets caught using magic is sentenced to death.
Another popular fantasy series if Being Human, a show about a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost all living together in the same flat, this show was so popular in Britain that it was even remade by the Sci Fi channel and set in America, however the British show and the American show are very different so be sure to check out the original British show before watching the American version.
Finally one of the most popular shows on the BBC right now is Doctor Who. Doctor Who follows the adventures through time and space of a mysterious alien known as "The Doctor," who encountes strange life forms and protects the Earth from alien invaders.
These shows can all be found at HPL. Just remember if you check out DVDs and TV series please return them in a timely fashion so that everyone can enjoy them, each DVD checks out for one week and there is a limit of 5 per card.
