Local bestsellers—August 12, 2011
There are many bestseller lists to choose from. Google “bestseller” then you can decide between the New York Times, Amazon, Baker & Taylor and more. Unfortunately, you can’t find “Hastings Nebraska bestsellers”. What are Hastings Public Library patrons reading, listening to or watching? I’ve decided to generate a list of my own.
Series books have been sought-after. Janet Evanovich’s “Smokin Seventeen”, the seventeenth installment in the Stephanie Plum series, was published in June and is very hot with thirty reserves. Other series that are in demand are: the “Millennium” series by Steig Larsson (“Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”); the teen trilogy “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins; and the children’s series “Ranger’s Apprentice” by John Flanagan.
Biographies also have been checking out. Aerosmith lead singer and American Idol judge, Steven Tyler’s “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? A Rock ‘n’ Roll Memoir” has been a local favorite. "Stolen Life : a Memoir” by Jaycee Dugard had nineteen reserves even before we received it. Other inspiring biographies that are in favor are “SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy Seal Sniper” by Howard Wasdin and “Unbroken: a World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” by Laura Hillabrand.
Reserves have whittled down for “Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back” by Todd Burpo. This title is a story about four year old Colton Burpo’s visit to Heaven during emergency surgery. The Burpo family is from Nebraska and at one time we had more than forty reserves on this title.
Music lovers ask for the “Now That’s What I Call Music” on CD and popular DVD titles are “Beastly”, “The Lincoln Lawyer”, “True Grit” and various TV series on DVD, including “Little House on the Prairie”, “Breaking Bad”, “House” and “Prison Break”.
Sometimes there is the misconception that the library doesn’t have popular or new items. We are constantly ordering and receiving new items. If there is high demand we add more copies. Bestsellers may not be readily available, so call or place your reserve online to get your name on the list for the local crowd pleasers.
